Why Are Women Smoking? A Closer Look

The thought of women smoking for many is little more than a glorified habit that somehow transcended itself into today’s society. Prior to that time, Hollywood beautified images of famous women smoking cigarettes on film, billboards and in several magazines. Although the idea of women smoking in society was deemed as being offensive at the time, cigarettes were a marketable product, which nonetheless were in vogue. Knowing this, why are the women of today’s society still smoking if health risks exist for themselves and others?

Many women often smoke socially and aren’t consciously aware of the peril that they are immersing themselves into. They may drink and smoke simultaneously in various social environments, such as a nightclub or at a bar. Because of the dangers that smoking causes to the women smoking and innocent bystanders receiving second-hand smoke, restaurants and other establishments alike have decided to prohibit smoking altogether.

Women have been more likely to experience a continuing problem with smoking because of the stresses they encounter, such as work, motherhood and having to measure up to their spouse’s standards as a wife. Many of us may not cope or respond very well with changes that occur throughout our lives, while the remainder of us doesn’t let stress discourage us from achieving success. Women who are smokers are often eager to find relief from everyday stresses and daily routines.

Women Smoking More Than Men?

Further, we may notice that many women are smoking more than men because it’s been said that smoking helps to promote a means of weight loss and weight management. Much of our modern society has placed a great deal of merit on the superiority of women who have and maintain a much more slender appearance. Smoking decreases hunger because the sensations within the taste buds and nasal cavity over time are greatly reduced.

There are still many more women smoking who attempt to fill a void from the occasional sting of loneliness. Although many of us enjoy being social with one another, some women are not as outgoing and attempt to avoid social interactions by smoking a cigarette, since many people have an aversion to smoking. Somehow smoking a cigarette affords relief from social activities and the cigarette replaces the need for friendship for those who are extremely shy. For those who are really introverted, smoking may replace the need for friendship although the previous appeal to smoking is currently decreasing.
